Get Glowing Skin from the Inside Out

When it comes to skin, I am a great believer in “you are what you eat”.  If my skin is acting up, I know that it will be down to eating the wrong foods or not drinking enough water.  Your skin really is a true reflection of your internal health and if you don’t eat right, it will show!  If you strive for clear, healthy, glowing skin, you need to know that miracle creams and serums won’t cut it alone – you have to eat well and treat your skin well (that means no alcohol-filled products!).  As the skin is last in line to receive nutrients from food, you need to maximise your diet with the right food in order for your skin to reap the rewards.  Here are some of my top tips for nourishing your skin…

Eat Organic

The best approach to following a healthy diet to improve your skin is to eat foods that you can grow, hunt or gather.  Avoid any processed foods which tend to be high in sugar, salt and preservatives and focus on eating highly nutritious, organic foods like fruit, veg, nuts, oily fish and grass-fed meat.  A lovely way to start is by growing your own veg in your garden or herbs in window boxes.

Anti-ageing Greens

Eating plants (mostly raw and mostly green) is an easy way to hydrate every cell in your body – and that keeps your skin plump and moist.  If you combine this with lifestyle changes like swapping sun worshiping for an organic fake tan, more sleep and exercise, your skin will begin to glow.  As a superfood supplement, try Chlorella.  Containing a high concentration of chlorophyll, Chlorella reverses any fine lines and sagging in your skin (not only on your face, on your boobs too - yay!).

Nourish with Fat

I love to pack my diet full of healthy Omega-3 and good fats.   I almost always eat a full avocado every day, I use extra virgin olive oil to top salads and fish and use coconut oil for cooking, removing my make-up every night, oil pulling and as a hair mask!

Fake it like the Celebs

As part of my skincare ritual, I rely on wearing an SPF every day (even in the winter) and avoid being exposed to too much sun, especially on my face.  As a result, I am not the bronzed goddess that I would like to be, so I rely on self-tanning products to give me the gorgeous glow that I long for.  With a celeb following from the likes of Gigi Hidad, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sofia Vergara, I was delighted to get the chance to try Vita Liberata’s non-toxic and organic tanning range.  Their pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan is the world’s longest lasting tan (up to 4 times longer than regular tans) and really does pass the test.  Not only is it paraben-free, alcohol-free and perfume-free, but it also has anti-ageing properties (!) – So as you tan, your skin is basically getting younger!  If you’re used to getting complaints from your bedtime pal about smelling like a hamster eating biscuits every time you fake tan, then this is the cherry-on-top…it doesn’t smell!

Be Smooth

If you want an easy way of squeezing a load of superfoods into your daily routine, a healthy smoothie is a great place to start!  There is no better way to kickstart your day than an antioxidant-rich, energising and skin-loving smoothie.  Packed with berries, oats and nut milk, this breakfast smoothie will make you feel fuller for longer and will work on giving your skin a fresh and youthful glow – you can’t really ask for much more!

Our Proposal Story

If you follow me on social media, then you might already know that in March, 2016 (spoiler alert) I agreed to marry my gorgeous boyfriend of seven years!  I was so overwhelmed by the wave of love from everyone's wishes and I don't even know where to begin to thank you all.  A common question was, "How did he propose?" and I thought I would share the answer...

How we met...

In July 2008, I was on a night out with my girlfriends playing what is known as ‘pub golf’.  Dressed in traditional ‘golf gear’, Argyle over-the-knee socks and short skirts, we set out to complete our ‘golf course’ of nine local bars, carrying our toy golf clubs on our backs.

In the eighth bar, I was walking past Andy and his friends and he stepped out in front of me.  His friends told me that he was a pro golfer and that I had to stop and talk to him.  Of course, I assumed that this was an elaborate chat up line, but it wasn’t, he IS a pro golfer!

His smile was infectious and I spent the night chatting to him about our favourite things and at the end of the night (after many failed and cheesy chat up lines), we kissed and I gave him my number.  Andy contacted me pretty much immediately and asked me on a date, but I made it clear to him that I wasn’t interested in dating anyone.

For the remainder of the summer, I travelled around the west coast of America.  Towards the end of my trip I was driving down Sunset Boulevard in LA and got a text from him asking me again to go on a date.  I hadn’t realised how persistent golfers are!  Andy pursued me with a true sportsman dedication and I liked his commitment to the cause.

When I arrived home, I gave up the fight and agreed to go on a date with him.  From that moment on, neither of us looked back.

How he asked...

For my 30th birthday present, Andy took me on a trip to Iceland.  On our first day, we spent the afternoon in the blue lagoon.

After watching the sunset, we got into our car and travelled to Hotel Ion in Nesjavellir.  It is a luxury, eco-friendly hotel perched on stilts at the foot of Mount Hengil in the stunning wilderness of southwest Iceland, which makes it perfect for stargazing and a great spot for the Northern Lights!

Upon arriving to the hotel, I understood the hype surrounding it.  The scenery demanded attention and the minimalist design in the Nordic themed hotel was stunning in contrast. After an incredible meal in Ion’s Silfra Restaurant, we were too full for dessert and opted to have a drink in the glass-walled Northern Lights bar.  Snuggled up under a wool blanket, we looked out at the vast, other-worldly landscape and were delighted when the aurora peaked out from behind the mountain and our very own light show began.

After our drink I was tired and suggested that we should go back to our suite.  Andy insisted that we should go for a walk in the snow because experiencing the Northern Lights would be a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.  I couldn’t really argue with him, so went back to the room and swapped my heels for snow boots and off we went.

We walked through the snow covered lava fields, under the dancing green lights in the sky.  When I said I was cold, Andy said we could warm up by standing beside the lights under the stilts holding up the hotel.  Walking over to the lights was beautiful – the hotel had lit hundreds of candles in the glass-fronted lava spa and the candlelight was bouncing off the 12metre lava pool.

Cuddled up against one of the stilts, Andy pulled out a little pile of Polaroids from his parka.  He had travelled around taking photos of all the places that have been significant in our relationship and written under each photo, “Where we first kissed…”, “Where we had our first date…”, etc.  We chatted through the memories behind each photo and at this stage I had no idea what was coming and thought that it was just part of a romantic birthday present.

When he produced the ring box from his pocket and dropped to one knee, I was silent for the first time in my life.  I was in complete shock!  When I was stood there, mouth open and was yet to answer his question of, “Will you marry me?” he laughed and said my favourite line of, “Well Fiona, what do you say?  Can I be your real life Instagram husband?” (This is after years of torturing Andy to take photos of me and allowing our meals to go cold while I ‘got the right photo!’ for Instagram).

And of course, in the most stunning setting I could have wished for, I threw my arms around him and said YES!

Gluten Free Travel Tips

For travel lovers, the idea of jetting off to new places is all about finding the perfect spot for some R&R in sun-drenched shores.  However, for those with on a gluten free diet, or in fact anyone following a restrictive diet, such as, dairy free, vegan, etc., the thought of going on holiday can be stressful with the initial thought being, “What can I eat when I’m there?”  However, I don’t ever let me put this off!  I love travelling to new places and trying local cuisine.  Yes it can be a bit trialing, but by planning and researching in advance, you can organise a stress free holiday!  (This is also perfect for people who like organised fun – liked me!).

Being well practiced in travelling as a ‘difficult eater’, I have some top tips to help you for your next getaway:

  1. BYO Snacks and Food for Travelling

Small airports with limited food options can be a nightmare when looking for food to suit a restrictive diet.  I don’t like to run the risk of not being able to eat (I am HORRIBLE when hangry) so I always pack a few snacks for before and during a flight.   FYI – I always keep a few snacks in my handbag for the same reason!  I really like the little snack boxes you can buy online, because they offer a range of different snacks, so you can snack according to your mood.  Alternatively, you can speak to your airline and pre-book a special meal.  Here are a few snack boxes that you can buy prior to travelling:

Healthy Nibbles // Graze // Primal Snack Box

           2. Notify your hotel

If I am staying in a hotel when travelling, one of the first things I do is get in contact to ensure that they can accommodate my gluten free diet.  More often than not, I will do this prior to booking a hotel!  Normally, most hotels will be good at lunch and dinner, but breakfast can be a little tricky.  If a hotel does not offer gluten free bread, I pack an emergency loaf in my suitcase and then if I fancy French toast or a sandwich I can give the bread to the hotel kitchen – crisis averted!  Also, you can ask your hotel to put a fridge into your room.  This seems like a strange request, but it isn’t.  This means that you can go to the local supermarket and stock up on fresh fruit, salads and little snacks that will keep you going if you get peckish.

         3.  Research the area you are travelling to

I first of all check Trip Advisor to see what restaurants are available locally – you can search for ‘gluten free’ to check if anyone has reviewed a restaurant based on their experience, this is always helpful!  A personal favourite way of finding brilliant restaurants is by contacting food and travel bloggers on Instagram who are local to the area.  Reading blogs can also offer endless restaurant inspo and will give you a fair idea of which dishes are good to order!  If you like the look of a restaurant, but can’t find any reference to dietary requirements or allergies, just send them an email and ask if they can accommodate your diet.  Here are a few of my favourite travel bloggers:

The Londoner, Mrs. O Around the World, Slice of Pai

La Degustaion, Prague - a Michelin star recommendation made to me through food blogs.

           4.  Bring a Travel Card

I love to try and learn a little bit of the local language before I travel to a country, but to eliminate any miscommunication I always bring a gluten free travel card.  My life saver over the past few years has been www.celiactravel.com/cards/ - they offer FREE printable restaurant cards that you can use when dining out abroad.  These cards explain that you are coeliac, what you can’t eat and provides information on cross contamination.  Further to this, it suggests foods that you can eat, to make it a little easier for the kitchen to come up with a meal for you!

             5.  Don’t see any gluten free items on a menu?

Don’t let that put you off!  You will be surprised how many restaurants have gluten free staples in their kitchen.  When I visited Rome, I was shocked that approximately 90% of restaurants I visited had gluten free bread, pizza and pasta available.  It’s always best to check with a waiter before writing the restaurant off completely!

            6.  Never take risks

If you’re unsure whether or not a food is safe for you to eat – don’t eat it!  There is nothing worse than ending up ill or unhappy on holiday, so you’re always better to wait until there is food available that you’re positive that you can eat.  If you get a plate of food that has a piece of bread or croutons on it, just ask for a completely fresh dish.  It only takes one crumb for you to be ‘glutened’.  If in doubt, fresh fruit is always a safe option.

             7.  Choose the best travel partners

Travelling when you're gluten free can also be straining on the people you're travelling with.  If a restaurant can not accommodate your allergy, you can all be faced with the same tricky circumstances of not knowing where to go next.  This is where your choice in travel partner will make the difference.  I have the most amazing friends and family who always make me feel so much better when there's nothing I can eat and will reassure me that moving to the next restaurant is 'our' best option, "I didn't even want to eat there, their menu wasn't that great - let's look for somewhere better!".  People with this attitude are the reason why I have never 'settled' for a mediocre meal while travelling - thank you, you are all my favourites! x
